A Franklin County grand jury voted Friday not to indict a Columbus police officer who shot and killed a man in September 2021.
The grand jury declined to indict Officer Andrew Hawkins in the shooting death of Kyle Veyon, according to the Franklin County Prosecuting Attorney's Office.
On Sept. 29, Columbus police responded to an open-line disturbance call in the area of 2469 Kimberly Parkway.
When officers arrived, they approached a female. The prosecutor's office said Veyon approached the woman and two officers and as Hawkins got out of his car, Veyon came toward him with a large kitchen knife, prompting Hawkins to pull his firearm.
The prosecutor's office said Veyon started chasing the woman as she yelled, "Get him, get him."
As officers chased after Veyon, the prosecutor's office said he started to move in Hawkins' direction and could be heard yelling "kill me" multiple times. Hawkins could be heard saying "stop" and "drop it."
As Veyon continued toward Hawkins, the prosecutor's office said Hawkins fired three shots, striking Veyon.
Veyon was taken to Grant Medical Center where he died as a result of his injuries.
