Escaped Lassen County inmate captured in Nevada

HUMBOLDT COUNTY, Nev. (KOLO) - DEC. 7 UPDATE: The Lassen County Sheriff’s Office says escaped inmate Angelo Atencio was captured after an overnight standoff in Humboldt County, Nev. overnight. Humboldt County Sheriff Mike Allen said deputies responded to a call on Davis Lane near Winnemucca around 8:00 p.m. Tuesday night.

A man and woman came out of the house. The man was arrested on an unrelated charge. SWAT officers arrived an hour later and began negotiations. Another man eventually came out of the house and claimed Atencio and his girlfriend Ashly Ward were not in the home. That man was arrested for obstruction.

Atencio later told a negotiator he had a gun and was holding Ward hostage. SWAT officers were able to hear her screaming. A fire was seen on the second floor of the home around 10:00 p.m. It appeared to burn itself out. Tear gas was deployed around 12:30 a.m. and the home caught fire again around 1:15. SWAT officers entered the home and rescued Ward and removed Atencio. Both Atencio and Ward were arrested on unspecified charges.

The Nevada Fire Marshal will investigate the cause of the fire.

4:22 P.M.UPDATE: The Lassen County Sheriff’s Office says Angelo Atencio was assisted in his escape by his girlfriend.

Police are now looking for the woman, identified as 33-year-old Ashly Ward of Susanville.

They say it was arranged that Ward would pick up Atencio near the Lassen County Jail after his escape.

Ward is described as a light-skinned black woman, five foot four, 150 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.

Anyone with information as to their whereabouts is asked to call 911. They are considered armed and dangerous.

ORIGINAL STORY: The Lassen County Sheriff’s Office is looking for a man who escaped from the Lassen County Jail.

35-year-old Angelo Atencio II was determined to have escaped the facility on Friday.

Atencio is described as a five foot ten Indian man weighing 230 pounds. He has a medium or stocky build with black hair and brown eyes.

A preliminary investigation suggests Atencio squeezed through a fence that had been manipulated in the roof area of an exercise yard. It was determined he had help from one or more persons outside of the facility as well as inside the facility.

Atencio was originally booked into the Lassen County Jail in May on charges related to kidnapping, home invasion robbery, false imprisonment, and parole violation.
