UPDATE 12/3 10:40 a.m.: The Virginia State Police announced their Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Field Office in Salem will be investigating the officer-involved shooting in Henry Co.

Troopers say the shooting happened when a white 1999 Buick LeSabre pulled over on the northbound Route 220 on-ramp. They have identified the driver as 57-year-old, Donald W. Hodges of Basset Va. Hodges exited the Buick with a hunting rifle and began to shoot at a vehicle as it passed him. VSP says the vehicle was struck but the driver was uninjured. A pickup truck drove by and Hodges fired again striking the driver.

State Police say within seconds a deputy pulled up, engaged Hodges, and fired at him. Hodges was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting. Troopers reported the driver of the truck was transported to Sovah Health Martinsville for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. The deputy was not injured in the shooting.

Virginia State Troopers say at this point in their investigation, it appears that Hodges was driving and brandishing his gun as drivers passed him. Virginia State Police say they are recreating his movements that lead up to the shooting.

UPDATE 12/2 6:09 p.m.: The Henry County Sheriff is reporting a man is dead after an officer-involved shooting.

Sheriff Lane Perry says an older man was shooting at cars just before 3 p.m. on Route 220 near Route 58. When an officer confronted the man, shots were fired and Sheriff Perry reports the man was killed. The officer was not injured.

Sheriff Perry says the officer’s actions saved lives.

The road has remained closed since the incident.

HENRY COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has reported police activity has shut down all lanes of US-220 in Henry County.

The shutdown area is near Greensboro Road and Route 220 North. All northbound and southbound lanes are closed.

Drivers can expect delays in the area and should seek an alternate route of travel.
