Orleans Parish DA says teen accused of shooting, paralyzing woman's son will be tried as adult
A teen accused of shooting and paralyzing a New Orleans woman's 24-year-old son will be tried as an adult in the case, according to the Orleans Parish District Attorney's office. The teen, identified as Cruz Matute, will be tried as an adult and will face an attempted second-degree murder charge as well as an armed robbery charge. Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams' office issued a statement saying juvenile sentencing limits were not sufficient for holding Matute accountable for the crime. Williams ran his campaign on a platform of not trying teens as adults but instead focusing on rehabilitation. This is not the first time he has decided to charge a juvenile as an adult since taking office. Williams' office issued the following statement about the decision: “We cannot ignore the seriousness of the perpetrator’s actions here. After collecting additional evidence and information, this week the DA’s Office presented and secured a special Grand Jury indictment of Cruz Matute for Attempted Second Degree Murder and Armed Robbery. "According to reports, Matute participated in a violent armed robbery which led to a victim being shot and paralyzed. The truth is the existing juvenile sentencing limits would be inadequate in holding Matute accountable for this senseless violence; we must pursue appropriate accountability. "I am very grateful to former NOPD Officer Chad Perez and Penacle Security for their efforts and work to help our office secure the additional evidence necessary to move this case forward.”Earlier reports: A New Orleans mother wants a harsher punishment on the table for the person she says shot her son and left him paralyzed. The reported armed robbery happened back in August on Paris Avenue in Lake Terrace. The 24-year-old victim, Noah, was on a walk when he was shot. He hasn't been able to walk again since. "One of the bullets hit my rib and shot bone shards into my spine which paralyzed me from the waist down," Noah said. "Two guys pulled up; the passenger hopped out with an AK-style pistol weapon while the driver was parking to obviously make sure I didn't try to run off."The NOPD confirms a juvenile was arrested and charged in connection to Noah's case. Police say a second person believed to be involved still hasn't been caught. "When that young man pulled that trigger, he had to accept the consequences of his actions. In this case, he pulled the trigger, and his consequence is he paralyzed my son," Elisabeth, Noah's mom, said. Elisabeth is hopeful and adamant the case be moved to adult court. She says she heard from the DA's office on Wednesday morning that they will meet with her to further discuss the case later this month. "I do not feel five years, in my opinion, is fair, considering my son has to spend a lifetime in a wheelchair," Elisabeth said. "Juveniles will then get the message, that if they commit heinous crimes, they don't get the protection of juvenile courts. They are going to have to face the consequences of what they are doing to others."
