HENRY COUNTY, Va. (WDBJ) - Virginia State Police have released the name of a man shot and killed by a Henry County Sheriff’s deputy Friday afternoon. Donald W. Hodges, 57 of Bassett, died at the scene.

Police say Hodges had been driving a white Buick LeSabre, and stopped along the Rte. 220N ramp to Business 220 shortly after 3 p.m., and got out of the car with a hunting rifle. He then shot at a passing vehicle. That vehicle was hit, but the driver was not injured.

Hodges then shot at a pickup; the driver of that truck was shot and taken to a hospital for treatment of what police call non-critical injuries.

A few seconds later, according to state police, the Henry Co. Sheriff’s deputy pulled up in front of the Buick and exchanged gunfire with Hodges. The deputy was not hurt.

The sheriff’s office reports having received several calls reporting someone with a gun in a car along 200 shortly before the shooting. Police ask anyone with information about the shooting, or who saw Hodges or the Buick in the time leading to the shooting, to contact 540-380-5700.
