Happy Valley's third and final season has confirmed a return date.

The long-awaited third part of the Sarah Lancashire drama has been a while coming, with the last season airing all the way back in 2016.

The BBC have now confirmed that the final season will premiere on New Year's Day (Sunday, January 1) on BBC One and BBC iPlayer at 9pm. Watch a teaser below:

The show will see the return of Lancashire's Catherine Cawood seven years later, as she discovers "the remains of a gangland murder victim in a drained reservoir" which "sparks a chain of events that leads her straight back to Tommy Lee Royce [James Norton]".

"Her grandson, Ryan [Rhys Connah], is now sixteen and has ideas of his own about the kind of relationship he wants to have with the man Catherine refuses to acknowledge as his father, leaving Catherine's sister Clare [Siobhan Finneran] caught in the middle," the synopsis continues.

"In another part of the valley, a local pharmacist gets in over his head when a neighbour is arrested."

Creator Sally Wainwright teased the show's time jump earlier this year, telling Radio Times: "I think it's going to be good. I think it's going to be exciting. We've got some very good stories.

"Everyone's back – all the characters you'd expect to see are back. We're seven years on.

"The plan was to wait for Ryan to be older so that he can make his own choices about whether he wants to have contact with his dad or not. So it really explores that."

Happy Valley will return on New Year's Day (Sunday, January 1) at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
