(WBBM NEWSRADIO) — Two suburban businesses could lose their license to sell puppies, as a result of a new state law.

The Illinois Department of Agriculture said it wants to revoke the dog-dealing licenses of a Batavia Petland store and The Perfect Pup in St. Charles.

Both were charged on Nov. 14 with violating the Illinois Animal Welfare Act.

The allegation is they were operating as pet stores without having a pet store license. At one time, both stores had pet shop licenses but have since given them up.

Under the Illinois Animal Welfare Act, it’s illegal for pet shops to sell dogs, unless they obtained them from animal shelters or animal-control facilities — not breeders.

The Batavia Petland store is located at 401 N. Randall Rd. and 2400 E. Main St.
