Cristiano Ronaldo admitted he felt 'free as a bird' following his departure from Manchester United, according to TV presenter Piers Morgan.

It was Ronaldo's famous interview with Morgan, in which the Portugal international admitted he lacked respect for Erik ten Hag and took aim at the Glazer family, which ultimately led to his abrupt departure from Old Trafford.

Speaking to The Telegraph, Morgan revealed his first text conversation with Ronaldo after the news of his departure was made public.

“I texted Cristiano a GIF of William Wallace in Braveheart shouting, 'Freedom!' he explained. “He thought that was a perfect summation of how he felt. ‘Free as a bird’ was his response.”

As far as his next move goes, Ronaldo is the subject of interest from Saudi Arabia, but 90min understands that the veteran striker would prefer to remain in Europe and add to his Champions League goal tally.

“He thinks that if he does well at this World Cup, he’ll get what he really wants, which is a club in the Champions League that extends his record and his legacy," Morgan said.

“It’s not about money at this stage of his career. It comes down to a burning desire to play football at the highest level, to break records and win trophies. And he has done that in more countries than any other player in history.”
