1 killed after van rear-ends Georgetown County school bus stopping at railroad crossing

GEORGETOWN COUNTY, S.C. (WCBD) — A 58-year-old Moncks Corner man died at a hospital Friday morning after his van rear-ended a school bus that was slowing down to stop at a railroad crossing in Georgetown County, authorities said.

There were 22 students and five adults on the bus, and the driver, one adult and six students were taken to the hospital with minor injuries, according to Cpl. David Jones of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The crash happened at about 8:45 a.m. on Highmarket Street, about 9 miles west of Georgetown, while both vehicles were traveling east, Jones said.

Earlier Friday, the Georgetown County School District said 23 students and four staff members from Sampit Elementary School were on the bus when the crash happened. The district said five students and the driver were taken to the hospital.

The name of the person man who died has not been released. He was taken to Tidelands Georgetown Memorial Hospital after the crash, according to Georgetown County Coroner Chase Ridgeway.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating.
