Northern California forecast: I-80 reopens as multiple spinouts affect traffic
SEVEN MODESTO-AREA GRADUATES. GULSTAN: THAT SOUNDS SWEET RIGHT THERE. KCRA 3 WEATHER NOW. TAKING A LIVE LOOK. LET’S GET ON INTERSTATE 80 IN SISCO GROVE. THIS IS FROM THE PASSENGER SIDE HERE. BRITTANY HOPE IS LIVE ON THE ROAD. HOW ARE YOU GUYS GETTING ALONG OUT THERE? GETTING OK? BRITTANY: SO FAR, THE ROADS HAVE BEEN PRETTY GOOD HEADING WESTBOUND, BUT I WILL SAY WE WERE JUST IN KINGVALE AND THAT IS WHERE THE SECOND CHAIN CONTROLS WAS AND THAT IS WHERE I-80 WAS REDUCED TO TWO LANES. IT WAS NOT A PRETTY SIGHT DOWN THERE. RIGHT NOW AS WE ARE APPROACHING SISCO GROVE, WE ARE ONE MILE OUT FROM THE COMMUNITY PROPER, THE SNOW STARTING TO COME DOWN AGAIN. THIS STARTED AS WE WERE COMING ON CAMERA. YOU CAN SEE THERE IS SNOW ON THE ROADS AND IN FRONT OF US THERE IS A LOT OF BRAKE LIGHTS. THIS IS THAT AREA, IF YOU ARE FAMILIAR. WE ARE SEEING A LOT MORE OF THOSE BRAKE LIGHTS. IF YOU’RE HEADING EASTBOUND ON I-80 TOWARD THE SIERRA AND KINGVALE, CHAIN CONTROLS DO START RIGHT NOW AT NYACK. AS SOON AS NYACK IS COVERED, IF YOU ARE IN BETWEEN THERE AND KINGVALE, THAT IS WHEN YOU WILL HAVE CHAIN CONTROLS AGAIN. HEADED WESTBOUND, WE ARE SEEING THE SNOW. EVERYONE IS GOING PRETTY SLOW RIGHT NOW. WE ARE GOING ABOUT 20 MILES AN HOUR BECAUSE THE ROADS ARE REALLY SLICK, AND YOU CAN SEE THE SEMI’S ARE KEEPING TO THE RIGHT. I DO SEE SOME C CREW LIGHTS. THERE HAVE BEEN A LOT OF REPORTS OF SPINOUTS THAT HAVE BEEN HAPPENING. IN FACT, WE KNOW A PICKUP TRUCK HIT A CALTRANS SNOWPLOW AROUND DONNER SUMMIT. LUCKILY, NO ONE WAS INJURED, BUT WHAT A SCARY SITUATION. WE ARE PULLING UP ON THESE BRIGHT LIGHTS YOU CAN SEE. IT DOES LOOK LIKE THIS IS A SNOWPLOW TRYING TO HELP US OUT. A HUGE THANK YOU TO THE CALTRANS CREWS. THIS PLOW IN FRONT OF US IS PLOWING THIS SECOND LANE SO THAT THE TWO LANES CAN STAY OPEN. THAT SNOW IS REALLY COMING DOWN. WE ARE STAYING 100 FEET BACK FROM THIS SNOWPLOW. YOU NEED CHAINS IF YOU’RE HEADED TO THE SIERRA. EDIE: IT IS NICE TO SEE EVERYTHING MOVING. THANK YOU FOR THE UPDATE. LET’S CHECK IN WITH MARK. WHAT CAN PEOPLE EXPECT? MARK: IT IS SO INTERESTING AND IT HAPPENS ALL THE TIME TO SEE THE QUIET CONDITIONS OF THE VALLEY, AND IT IS SO DIFFERENT IN THE SIERRA. A LOT OF TIMES THAT CATCHES PEOPLE OFF GUARD. YOU DRIVE ON INTERSTATE 80 THROUGH THE VALLEY, GO THROUGH ROSEVILLE, ROCKLAND, THEN YOU GET UP TO BE THOUSAND FEET AND YOU ARE INTO SNOW -- GET UP TO 3000 FEET AND YOU ARE INTO SNOW. THE WIND IS CALM. IN STOCKTON, PARTLY CLOUDY SKIES, 52. THE TEMPERATURES WILL NOT DROP OUT THAT QUICKLY TONIGHT. IT WILL END UP IN THE LOW 40’S. WE HAVE BEEN IN THE 30’S A LOT LATELY, SO NOT AS COLD AS IT HAS BEEN RECENTLY. WE HAVE 52 DEGREES. FAIRFIELD PARTLY CLOUDY SKIES, 51. TEMPERATURES IN THE VALLEY RELATIVELY UNIFORM. SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, 21 DEGREES -- 28 DEGREES WITH LIGHT SNOW FALLING. WE ARE DOING GOOD IN TERMS OF RAIN. THE AVERAGE TRAIN FOR SACRAMENTO FROM OCTOBER 1 TO TODAY IS 3.21. WE ARE IN THE PART OF THE YEAR WHERE IT STARTS ACCELERATING. WE AVERAGED MORE THAN THREE INCHES OF RAIN IN THE MONTH OF DECEMBER. WE ARE NOW UP TO 4.10, MOST OF THAT COMING IN THE LAST FEW DAYS, AND THAT PUTS US AT 127% OF AVERAGE. IT IS THIS PACE WE NEED TO KEEP GOING THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. I WILL SHOW YOU THE SNOWPACK BECAUSE THAT IS ALSO LOOKING REALLY GOOD. HANGING ONTO RAIN IN THE FOOTHILLS, AND THAT WILL TURN INTO MORE SNOW AS WE GO TO THE EVENING HOURS TONIGHT. BUT ALL OF THAT WILL BE WRAPPING UP AS A PACKAGE OF THIS WEATHER SYSTEM SLIDES THROUGH. THERE COULD BE A FEW MORE SHOWERS LATE TONIGHT AND EARLY TOMORROW. THIS IS AROUND 11:30. YOU SEE RAIN ON THE FUTURECAST. IT TRIES TO SWING THROUGH THE VALLEY. THIS IS 7:00 TOMORROW MORNING. IF THERE IS GOING TO BE ANY RAIN IN THE MORNING, IT WILL BE ON THE COAST OR STANISLAUS OR SAN JOAQUIN COUNTY. GRADUALLY WE WILL SEE CLEARING. SACRAMENTO COUNTY AND POINTS NORTH WILL BE CLEAR, AND YOU WILL FIND BETTER TRAVEL TOMORROW IN THE SIERRA. THERE COULD STILL BE CHAIN CONTROLS FIRST THING IN THE MORNING, BUT THE REST OF THE DAY AND THROUGH THE DAY WEDNESDAY, THIS IS WEDNESDAY MORNING AND AFTERNOON, THAT WILL BE A GOOD TRAVEL DAY. BEYOND THAT, THERE IS MORE RAIN AND SNOW COMING. TOMORROW IN THE SIERRA, WE WILL SEE CLEARING SKIES, BUT THERE COULD BE CHAIN CONTROLS FIRST THING IN THE MORNING. BY MIDDAY, THE ROADS WILL BE IN GOOD SHAPE. 45 IN POLLOCK PINES. THE FOOTHILLS WILL SEE OVERNIGHT LOWS DROPPED TO THE MID TO UPPER 30’S. HIGHS TOMORROW INTO THE 50’S. YOU SEE A HIGH OF 58 IN FAIRFIELD. MORNING CLOUDS AND AFTERNOON SUN, AND THE SAME TREND FOR THE VALLEY. MORNING CLOUDS, AFTERNOON SUN. 58 IN SACRAMENTO, WHICH IS NOW THE AVERAGE FOR THIS TIME OF THE YEAR. WE ARE DRY THROUGH THURSDAY, THOUGH THE RAIN COULD ARRIVE AS EARLY AS THURSDAY NIGHT. WE WILL LIKELY HAVE RAIN FRIDAY AND SATURDAY PART OF THE TIME. WE WILL FIGURE OUT THE EXACT DETAILS IN THE COMING DAYS, BUT MAYBE SOME OF THAT LINGERING INTO SUNDAY. WE DON’T KNOW A LOT OF DETAILS ABOUT THAT JUST YET, BUT IT IS NICE TO HAVE THAT IN THE FORECAST.

RAIN ON MONDAY

By 3 p.m., occasional showers will begin to blossom again with the occasional rumble of thunder.

The Valley could see .10 to .40 inches of rain, with the Foothills possibly seeing .25 to .75 inches.

“The last part of the system tries to come through during the overnight and early tomorrow morning,” Javora said.

As the system moves through Tuesday, Northern California may see a brief shower in the morning, but the rest of the day will be dry.

Snowfall for the mountains on Monday will be mainly above 4,000 feet. Around the passes, we could see 6 to 8 inches of new accumulation in the next 24 hours.

Travel in the Sierra on Tuesday will be much better, with less snow in the morning and some lingering snow showers.

“So from here on in, again, just a couple of inches of snow, 2 to 4 inches of snow by Tuesday morning from here on in,” Javora said.

LOOKING AHEAD

Wednesday will stay dry, and the front half of Thursday may also stay dry.

However, later in the day Thursday may see some rain showers.

“Then we're getting into more unsettled weather as we head into late Friday and into Saturday,” Berg said.
