LOCAL FORECAST AHEAD:

Attention for the forecast turns to showers and storms that could impact the Marathon weekend in Champaign-Urbana and other plans in the area. Below is a look at FutureTrack with our latest thoughts on rain. We think some storms will be in the area both Friday and Saturday morning, but we could certainly time things out for the race to go off without a hitch when considering the weather.

You’ll notice Saturday morning some lingering showers and storms moving through. That could lead to some lightning with severe storms unlikely, but they move through quickly if so. Won’t be a washout but we have to watch timing closely. Here’s the planner below. The other thing to note is that there will be blustery south winds in place during the race.

One concern about our back-to-back systems coming is the potential for severe weather. There is a risk of stronger storms into the weekend in Central Illinois as rounds of showers and storms come and go. The greatest potential is likely to be to our west, and our best chance locally might be Sunday, but we will have to watch things closely.

We’ll have to evaluate the threats day-by-day, but in general wind and hail would be the main threat. The tornado threat likely stays low but could increase some on any particular day. In addition, due to potential heavy rain, some flash flooding is possible.

As one system rolls in towards the end of the weekend, an additional system may follow up shortly after, meaning that the warm and moist airmass will stay in place and allow for more activity such as potential severe weather. Guidance continue to give the idea that it could be a little more busy around here this weekend and beyond.

Temperatures will trend close to average in the coming days, but as our storm activity kicks up, so too will our temperatures.
