The West Seattle Low Bridge will remain closed for at least two weeks while transportation officials repair mechanical issues exacerbated by power outages during last week's ice storm.
The Seattle Department of Transportation said the Spokane Street Swing Bridge, also known as the West Seattle Low Bridge, will be closed for biking, walking, driving and freight traffic for at least two weeks. The bridge has been closed since Dec. 23.
"It's a complex bridge, it's an unusual bridge, it's practically one of a kind with its complex hydraulic systems, communications and controls so as you can imagine we're all hands on deck trying to find out what the problem is," said Francisca Stefan, SDOT deputy director. "We're beginning to have some clarity, although any of these complex systems, the problem can appear to be in one place and then the problem is deeper in the system." Read more
Patrick Holland needed to fly from Fairbanks, Alaska to Seattle for a heart transplant.
He was 1,500 flight miles away from a second chance at a longer life, but because of hundreds of cancellations at Sea-Tac Friday his heart went to the next person on the list.
Holland’s suitcase is staying packed and he plans to come to Seattle in two weeks. He’s trying to find a place to stay so he doesn’t miss another opportunity for a new heart.
“I will be closer, there'll be no storms to stop me," Holland said. "It would take a completely different act of God to stop me." Read more
Washington Attorney General Bob Ferguson has sued a Seattle-area plastic surgery provider, alleging that it posted fake positive online reviews of their services and bribed and threatened patients to prevent negative ones.
Ferguson filed the lawsuit in federal court Thursday against Allure Esthetic and its owner Dr. Javad Sajan.
“Allure stopped at nothing to keep negative reviews off the internet,” Ferguson said.
Allure Esthetic has offices in Seattle, Lynnwood and Kirkland, offering surgical and non-surgical treatments, including botox and gender-affirming care. Read more
In 2019, Washington’s greenhouse gas emissions reached their highest point in 12 years, according to a state Department of Ecology report released Wednesday.
Emissions reached 101.2 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent in 2019, which was a 6.9% increase over 2018. The spike was due to increased electricity demand and a poor hydropower year, which pushed utility companies to use fossil fuels to make up the difference, Ecology said. Read more
Seattle and state police are gearing up for a busy weekend patrolling Washington roads as people head out to celebrate the new year.
The Seattle Police Department and Washington State Patrol said Dec. 31 is one of the busiest nights of the year and staffing for the increase in activity is planned months in advance.
