A semi-truck passenger is in the hospital with serious injuries from Thursday's crash into a bridge support pillar in northwest Dallas.

The 18-wheeler smashed into the pillar on northbound I-35E beneath one of the I-635 flyover ramps. The cab of the truck was caved in.

The driver managed to escape but the passenger was hurt and pinned in the mangled wreckage.

Dallas Fire-Rescue brought in one its highly-trained Urban Search and Rescue teams but even with their specialized knowledge and heavy tools, it took a couple of hours to pry the victim out to be airlifted to the hospital trauma center.

A car was also involved in the crash. That driver was also taken to the hospital. No names or conditions have been released for either patient.
