New details on deadly I-90 crash

CLEVELAND (WJW) — The Cleveland Division of Police has released preliminary information on the cause of a deadly crash that closed the interstate for several hours Friday morning.

I-90 East at West 44th/West 41st Street reopened just before 7 a.m.

FOX 8’s Patty Harken reported live from the scene throughout the morning.

According to preliminary information from police, a driver in a Dodge Challenger hit the concrete median wall on I-90 east approaching West 41st St.

The driver got out of the car, and according to police, stayed within the lanes of traffic.

At that time, the driver of a Jeep Cherokee was headed eastbound on I-90.

The driver hit the man who was standing in the road.

A truck driver who saw the crash talked to FOX 8.

“There was a car that was in the middle of the road I believe it hit the guardrail or something. I could just see it was dented up already,” he said.

“The person or the driver or the passenger in that car was outside his car standing by the driver’s door waving his or her hands over their head and waving them back and forth to direct the car coming at them but that car didn’t react at all. It hit that car in the back either at or near full speed.”

At the same time, the driver of a Honda hit the Dodge Challenger’s rear end, causing it to hit a semi-truck.

Police say the pedestrian was trapped under the car.

The driver of the Dodge Challenger was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Honda was also hospitalized with serious injuries.

EMS tells FOX 8 a 27-year-old man died at the scene. A 22-year-old man was taken to the hospital in serious condition.

All lanes on I-90 East near West 44th Street were closed for nearly three hours.
