Local Sports: Summerfield offense clicking in season-opening win

PETERSBURG − Summerfield's energy was nearly overflowing.

The Bulldogs' girls basketball team burst onto the court to open the season with a 70-21 win over Lincoln Park Thursday night.

"The girls have been waiting to play and came out with a lot of energy tonight," Summerfield coach Mickey Moody said. "I was pleased with how we ran the floor and how we made the extra pass."

Abby Haller scored 19 points, Destanee Smith added 14, and Ava Fisher 12 as the Bulldogs raced out to a 25-0 lead in the first quarter.

Mayley Mannebach (9 points) and Jaili Jones (8) played well in their varsity debuts. Mia Miller and Cameron Taylor were strong defensively.

"Overall it was a good start for us, but we have to rebound way, way better and finish down low," Moody said. "I really like our team and how the girls want to get out and run and play a full-court game."

Summerfield won the junior varsity game 53-6. Bethany Suydam had 16 points and Makenzie Wolfe 14.

Bedford wins opener

TEMPERANCE – Bedford set the tone early in its girls basketball season opener against Manchester Thursday.

The Mules jumped out to a 10-point lead in the opening period and wound up winning the game by 11, 55-44.

Victoria Gray scored 7 of her game-high 21 points in the first quarter.

Nyah Mullins added 11 points.

Dundee honored

Dundee's football team received honorable mention All-State Academic honors in Division 5.

Matt Atkinson, Caden Bellaire, Colton Bordine, Justin Busz, Jacob Fenbert, Evan Imo, Joe Maseman, Brayden Ratliff and Johnny Swisher all received individual honors.

MIDDLE SCHOOL BASKETBALL

Seventh graders 6-1

Bedford's seventh-grade boys improved to 6-1 with a 24-10 win over Dexter Wednesday with Braylon Butler, Damion Hart and Nathaniel Birmingham leading the way.

Evan Gartee and Cashton Sedlar led the eighth grade to a 25-20 victory.

ADULT SOCCER

Lovell scores four

Josh Lovell poured in four goals and Ashley Lore, Stacey VanDeusen and Tyler Caruso also scored to lead Not Fast Just Furious to a 7-3 win over Athletico opening night of the Monroe Indoor Coed Adult Soccer League at LevelUp Training Sunday.

Kayla Vore, Jaeden Vega and Habeeb Bello scored for Athletico.

There are 10 teams competing in Winter Session II. In other games, Brian Merkle and Nate Cook both had two goals and Jake Winter added one to lead HotSpurs to a 5-4 win over Dundee Ace.
