A new homeless shelter in Johnson County is welcoming people in for the first time this season.
For the 8th winter in a row, the beds at Project 1020 in Lenexa will be full with people in need of a warm place to stay.
"I feel a relief today in a lot of ways. and the relief is that I know we're going to be able to bring some people inside to get them out of the cold, the elements," said Barbara McEver, co-founder and director of Project 1020.
Project 1020 is the only shelter for adults only in Johnson County.
It’s where men and women can come stay the night, have a hot meal, and wash up.
"Just see the look of relief on their face when they walk through the door and know that, you know, that they're going to be treated well and that we're happy to see and we're happy that they found us," McEver said.
McEver says this year there’s been more people calling and asking when it will open.
"I think a lot of people have lost jobs and I’m sure covid has created problems everywhere," McEver said.
She says it’s that need that keeps her going and giving folks a chance to get back on their feet.
"I want people to have a little bit of a reprieve and a little bit of time to relax a little bit and not be so worried about where they're going to be tomorrow night. they know that they can come here," McEver said.
The shelter opens from 6 p.m. to 8 a.m. and will open until April.
