Muskegon Lakeshore Trail detoured for waterfront development construction

December 1, 2022

MUSKEGON, MI — A section of the Muskegon Lakeshore Trail bike path surrounding Adelaide Pointe will be temporarily rerouted during construction of the Muskegon Lake waterfront mixed-use development.

The use of heavy machinery and other construction activity in the area will make the trail area unsafe for recreational use. The detour is expected to last 18 months beginning in the middle of December and wrapping up in June of 2024. The Adelaide Pointe construction will not limit use of the Hartshorn Marina launch ramp.

The alternate route will direct trail users from the bike path onto West Western Avenue for roughly half a mile. The detour will use the roadway on West Western Avenue from the Boys & Girls Club at 900 W. Western Ave. on the east to the street-ending cul-de-sac on the west.

The City of Muskegon Department of Public Works will be placing lane guidance and safety signs for the bike path detour along West Western Avenue. Between the end of West Western Avenue to the bike path the city will work with the developer to smooth a connection back to the trail over a curb, green space and unused railroad tracks. The Adelaide Point contractors will be leveling the area to ensure that users can safety navigate that section of detoured trail.

Upon completion of construction, the Muskegon Lakeshore Trail bike path will be back to normal operations.
