Alta Aurelia Boys Rally in 4th Quarter ; Win Season Opener

A big 4th quarter run sparked the Alta Aurelia boys basketball to a 57-51 win at Ridge View in the season opener for both teams Thursday in Holstein.

Alta Aurelia scored the last six points of the 1st quarter to take an 11-6 lead. The Warriors strung together six straight points in the 2nd quarter as well which helped them to a ten point lead. A basket followed by an and-one by Jack Bloom with no time on the clock gave Alta Aurelia a 32-24 lead at halftime.

The Warriors gained their biggest lead of 11 points early in the 3rd, but that’s when the Raptors turned the tide with a 15-0 run. Ridge View was up 42-41 going into the 4th. Ridge View score the opening two buckets of the 4th to extend the lead to 46-41. From there, Alta Aurelia went on a 14-0 run, which included a three by Bloom to make it 50-46 with four minutes left.

Braden Sonksen scored 18 of his game-leading 25 points in the 1st half for the Warriors, and Bloom contributed 11. Cael Myrtue had 10 points for the Raptors, and Kyler Wunschel added 9. Alta Aurelia coach Scott Randall’s postgame comments can be heard below.

The Alta Aurelia girls and boys teams play tomorrow night (Fri) at home against Storm Lake St. Marys. The Ridge View teams tomorrow play host to Lawton Bronson.
