HE SAYS THOUGH THERE’S A LOT OF WORK TO BE DONE, ESPECIALLY SINCE SACRAMENTO IS ONE OF THE TOP 40 HOTSPOTS FOR HIV. ACCORDING TO THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION. THE BIG PROBLEM IS THAT ONE IN SEVEN WE DON’T KNOW THEIR HIV POSITIVE WHO CONTINUE TO SPREAD THE DISEASE. THAT’S THE PROBLEM. CDC ranks Sacramento County as top 40 hot spot for HIV cases

Sacramento city leaders gathered on World AIDS Day to commemorate the work done to fight the disease and remember those who have died.They met at City Hall on Thursday to issue a call to action to end the epidemic. There is a national initiative underway to end the epidemic by 2030. "Thank God that AIDS is no longer a death sentence," said Sacramento Mayor Darrell Steinberg.Steinberg, other local leaders and activists are calling on the community to step up to protect their health. "The bad news is there are far too many people who aren't getting tested," Steinberg said.Health experts said one of the best tools is taking the test, which takes about 20 minutes.Sunburst Clinic offers free, confidential testing five days a week."The work is two-fold, working with those who are positive and know their status and working with the general public for those folks who have never tested and need a place to get tested could," said Jake Bradley-Rowe, executive director of Sunburst.Because there is a need, Sunburst received federal funding since Sacramento County ranks as one of the top 40 hot spots in the country for HIV cases, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC said one in seven people are infected with HIV and don't know it."We can't be one of the 40 hot spots going forward and the only way we can change that is by people knowing their status," Bradley-Rowe said.
