Preparing for a chance of rain during the California International Marathon
IN SACRAMENTO. IT MIGHT SEEM GLOOMY AT FIRST, BUT THERE’S UNUSUALLY SOGGY SACRAMENTO MORNING BECAUSE THESE HAD MANY PEOPLE SMILE TODAY. OH, IT’S BEAUTIFUL. THIS IS GREAT. IT’S NICE. WE NEED THE RAIN. I LIKE RAIN. I LIKE BEING COZY. I LIKE HAVING WARM DRINKS. OBVIOUSLY. IT’S A COLD DAY. SO COFFEE’S STRENGTH KEEPS US MORE THAN HAPPY. AND THERE COULD BE MORE OF THIS RARE RAIN. THIS WEEKEND. THE CHANCE OF RAIN COMES AS THE CALIFORNIA INTERNATIONAL MARATHON IS SLATED TO CAUSE ROAD CLOSURES TO MAKE ROOM FOR 10,000 RUNNERS COMING TO THE AREA. THE COURSE TEAM WORKED AROUND THE RAIN TODAY TO SET UP FOR SUNDAY LOADING SUPPLIES ONTO TRUCKS TO BE DEPLOYED ALONG THE 26.2 MILE ROUTE FROM FOLSOM TO THE STATE CAPITAL. THESE ARE ALL OUR OUR AID STATION PALLETS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR SCOTT ABBOTT SAYS THEY ARE PREPARING IN CASE OF RAIN. WE TRY TO DO A LITTLE BIT MORE TENDING. OBVIOUSLY WE’RE PREPARING FOR MORE DISCARDED CLOTHING AND WE PARTNER WITH INDUSTRIES. THEY PICK UP A LOT OF OUR DISCARDED CLOTHES FROM OUR RUNNERS THAT THEY DISCARD IN THE FIRST COUPLE OF MILES OF THE RACE. AND HE WANTS TO ENCOURAGE VOLUNTEERS TO STILL SHOW UP, RAIN OR SHINE. VOLUNTEERS ARE SUCH AN IMPORTANT PART OF THIS EVENT. WE USE OVER 4000 VOLUNTEERS FROM A VARIETY OF COMMUNITY GROUPS HERE IN SACRAMENTO. FOR THE RUNNERS. ABBOTT SAYS SOMETIMES BATTLING THE WEATHER BECOMES A BADGE OF HONOR AND THOSE WHO DO IT YEAR AFTER YEAR SEEN IT ALL. IN 2012 WE SAW ICE BECAUSE TEMPERATURES WERE IN THE 20. WE’VE SEEN WINDSTORMS AND IN IN 2013 FAR FROM WHAT’S THIS YEAR WE’RE NOT DEALING WITH ANY MAJOR STORM OR WIND. The chance for rain this weekend comes as the California International Marathon is expected to draw thousands of people to Sacramento.Event organizers are already setting up for the big race, and they are preparing in case of some rain showers."We try to do a little bit more tenting," said Executive Director Scott Abbott. "Obviously, we're preparing for more discarded clothing. We partnered with Goodwill Industries.
