Dolly Parton walked down memory lane during her appearance at "The Kelly Clarkson Show," as she recalled exactly when and how she first heard Whitney Houston's version of "I Will Always Love You."
Many associates "I Will Always Love You" with Houston nowadays, but for at least twenty years before the release of "The Bodyguard," people attributed Parton to the song.
"When they were doing the Bodyguard movie, they had chosen another song for the theme song," the 76-year-old singer-songwriter began, "Someone came out with that very song right when they were about to put the movie out."
She was referring to the 1992 movie "The Bodyguard,' which stars Kevin Costner and Houston. It follows Houston's character, an actress and singer, being protected by Costner's character, the bodyguard, from a stalker.

Parton then revealed that it was Costner who called her to ask permission to use her 1974 classic, to which she agreed.
"They called me to see if they could use it and I said yes," she continued. "And I didn't hear anything else about it. I didn't know if they had done it," she continued, which made both Clarkson and the audience laugh.
She then went on to recall the very instance when she first heard the cover and noted that she had no idea that it became such a hit.
"I was just driving along, I had the radio on and I heard this," she said. "When I heard the first 'If I...' I just freaked out. I had to pull over to the side because I honestly thought that I was gonna wreck."
It seems that Houston definitely brought justice and impressed the "9 to 5" singer, because she shared that she was overwhelmed by hearing Houston sing "I Will Always Love You."
"It was the most overwhelming feeling and you know how great that was," she added.
Duet
Elsewhere in the show, Parton complimented Clarkson's version of "I Will Always Love You" as well.
During the ACM Awards in March, Clarkson paid tribute to the country music star by performing the classic song, reports say.
"I've been meaning to tell you, that whole crowd, Whitney, she would've been so proud of you. It was incredible," said Parton.
The crowd and producers of the show then asked if Parton could sing her song, but she declined and instead suggested that she sing the chorus while Clarkson harmonized.
