The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office needs workers.
Right now there is a significant staffing shortage in the jail. To help alleviate the issue, the sheriff's office held a "live hiring" event at the Zoofari Center on Bluemound Road in Milwaukee.
Applicants filled out a questionnaire, interviewed on the spot and went through an initial background check to see if they qualified for one of nearly 80 open positions.
If so they could be offered a conditional job on the spot. They would still need to go through an in-depth background check prior to starting the job.
The sheriff's office also increased the pay from $18 per hour to $24 per hour. The wages will go up to $26 an hour in April 2023.
The goal is to remove the lengthy application process and wait times and make the job more appealing to qualified applicants.
The event ran from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
