A Cabell County jury found a former Huntington City Council member guilty on two charges in a shooting case.
Tom McCallister was found guilty Thursday of malicious wounding and using a firearm during the commission of a felony.
McCallister was charged in connection with the shooting of Ron McDowell Jr. in April 2019. The incident paralyzed McDowell who died in October. McCallister pleaded not guilty, insisting the shooting was self-defense.
Following about two hours of deliberation, the jury reached a unanimous decision.
During closing arguments, prosecutors stressed McCallister was the aggressor in the incident.
McCallister’s brother, Johnny McCallister, a former Cabell County magistrate, also was charged in the case, but those charges were dismissed.
Tom McCallister’s bail was revoked and sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 23. He faces two to 10 years in prison.
