Cade McNamara’s stay in the transfer portal is going to be a short one.

According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, McNamara has committed to transfer to Iowa. An announcement is expected shortly.

With Spencer Petras graduating and Alex Padilla transferring, this is a huge pickup for Kirk Ferentz’s squad.

McNamara entered 2022 as the incumbent starter for Jim Harbaugh’s program but eventually lost the starting quarterback spot to JJ McCarthy. McCarthy has helped lead the Wolverines to a 12-0 regular season while McNamara was injured in the 3rd game of the season and recently underwent surgery.

McCarthy has been the right choice for Michigan, but the draw of McNamara — especially for the Hawkeyes — is not hard to see. McNamara threw for 2,576 yards with 16 offensive touchdowns and 6 interceptions while completing 64.2% of his passes in 2021. Michigan went 12-2 with a B1G Championship and appearance in the College Football Playoff.

We will see how things pan out in Iowa, but this should be a big boost for Iowa after a tumultuous offensive year in 2022.
