Group finals previews: Breaking down this weekend’s historic football games

Rutgers will host all five group championship games this weekend.

It’s finally arrived.

Years in the making, the NJSIAA/Rothman Orthopaedics Group Championships for public schools are set for this weekend. High school football fans throughout the state have been eagerly waiting for this moment, the chance to finally crown state champions in each of the five groups.

Rutgers will be the place. A triple-header on Saturday kicks off championship weekend, with Woodbury playing Mountain Lakes in the inaugural Group 1 title game at noon. Delsea and Old Tappan will follow at 3 in the Group 3 final, with Millville and Northern Highlands wrapping up the day at 6 in the Group 4 final.

On Sunday, Rumson-Fair Haven and Caldwell meet at noon to determine the Group 2 champion. The event comes to an end with Toms River North and Passaic Tech battling for the Group 5 crown at 3.
