One person was injured and transported to the hospital Thursday afternoon after a partial building collapse near the site of the old Carraway Hospital in Birmingham, according to Birmingham Fire and Rescue Chief Jackie Hicks.
Crews responded to the scene of the partial building collapse at 25th Street North and Walnut Hill Circle. The location is near Carraway Hospital which has closed and is now being torn down to make room for the city's amphitheater project.
Hicks said some of the building collapsed on a piece of machinery which was working on demolition at the site.
The patient suffered injuries but was conscious and alert at the scene. They were transported to the emergency room.
Corporate Realty, the developer of The Star at Uptown, released a statement about the incident Thursday night.
Our top concern is for the injured worker, and our thoughts are with him and his family. We are in touch with the demolition contractor, and we are gratified to hear that his injuries are being treated and that he is expected to make a full recovery. Appropriate steps will be taken to ensure safety before moving ahead with demolition at this location. Other demolition work will progress, with safety as always our top priority.
This is a developing story and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
