Children's Friend started back in 1834.
"We were founded 188 years ago as a children's friend home to take care of literally neglected children, abandoned children out on the street," said David Caprio, president and CEO of Children's Friend.
Over the years, its mission has evolved. Children's Friend offers everything from head start programs and childcare to meeting basic needs.
This time of year? It's all about making sure kids get something extra special under the tree.
"Having four kids under the age of 18, you need all the help you can get to make Christmas happen," said Melissa Wagle of Pawtucket. Her kids have benefited over the years from this help.
"One of the most important things, I mean, specifically for the holiday drive -- the child gets something new," said Caprio. "Whether that's a new toy, a new truck or it could just be a sweater with a new tag on it, right? That can mean an awful lot to a child."
Every year, businesses and individuals are asked to adopt a family. More than 1,000 families benefit.
"Right now, we have over 500 families on our list who have not been sponsored yet," said Caprio.
They're also looking for donations of new clothing, toys and money.
"Those who have the ability to help even with an extra $10 gift, please do so. Our kids and our families need it. It's important for the kids," said Caprio. "Every parent wants to be able to give their child something new and not every parent has the ability to do this so your gift, also it can relieve a stress from a family."
"And the smiles on their faces just makes it just so unbelievably great on Christmas morning," added Wagle.
This year, there's another way to help families.
"One of our school buses that you know transports our kids to head start and childcare classes, and we're asking the community to come out and help us fill that," said Caprio.
That school bus will be parked at Warwick Mall Friday. You can donate your new toy or clothing or bring a donation between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the food court.
You can also donate Friday night at WaterFire from 5 until 9 p.m -- there'll be boxes set up around the basin.
