Since trading for Ellis ahead of the 2021-22 campaign, he has played a total of just four games with them. Injuries have robbed the Flyers of what was supposed to be an extremely steady top four defenseman from their lineup. He proved in his very short four game tenure just how good he can be, with a goal and five points over that span.

This latest news comes as little surprise, as Ellis had yet to play this season and a return date was never discussed. It is very possible at this point that the 31-year-old, who spent the majority of his career with the Nashville Predators, has already played in the last NHL game of his career.

As mentioned, the Flyers acquired Ellis during the 2021 offseason, in a trade that saw Philippe Myers and Nolan Patrick head to the Preds. It seemed like a great deal at the time, but Ellis’ injury, which is to his back, has completely taken away from that.

While it seems more likely than not at this point that his career is over, don’t expect a retirement announcement anytime soon. He is currently in year four of an eight-year deal, which pays him $6.25 million annually. If he were to retire, the remainder of the deal would be void, and he would not receive any of the money. Instead, he is likely to remain on long-term injured reserve, where he will be able to collect his money while not counting against the Flyers cap hit.

If this is indeed the last we have seen from Ellis, it was a very solid career for the 11th overall pick from the 2009 draft. In 566 career games, he has managed 76 goals and 275 points. Additionally, he has appeared in 74 playoff games, scoring seven goals and 38 points. We likely won’t receive any more updates on him until the offseason.
