BUTLER TOWNSHIP, Pa. — Exclusive dashcam video shows Butler Township Police officers saving a man from a burning car after a crash.
In the video, first responders are seen rushing to the scene as the car is engulfed in flames.
Two officers jumped into action, running to help the fire chief pull the driver out and drag him to safety.
The crash happened around 1 p.m. Wednesday along Fairground Hill Road. The driver who is in his 30s was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.
“When I looked into that vehicle, the passenger side was completely engulfed in flames, so if there was a passenger, there would have been no hope for them,” said officer Rachel Dovidio.
Both officers said that if they had gotten there just 30 seconds later, it could have been too late.
“From what we were told, the doctor said if we were seconds later, he may not have lived,” said Dovidio. “We saw there was a person being burned alive, so we saved him. That’s part of our job is to save others.”
They say fortunately the Butler Township fire chief, Scott Frederick, got to the scene first.
“The fire chief had to duck to get out of the way of the fire. He dove back into that vehicle, undid that seat belt and we were all able to pull the victim from the car,” said Dovidio.
The officers said this was a group effort to save the driver’s life.
“I got to speak with the driver’s Mom, and she really congratulated us for helping her son,” said officer Bill Dobson.
“This why I became a cop. For moments like this; to help people,” added Dovidio.
