City school board a champion for children
Editor’s Note: Community Comment is a periodic column in The Mount Airy News featuring commentary from community leaders in Mount Airy and Surry County. This month is Board Appreciation Month and I wrote this column last year. I feel it is worth publishing again with some slight updates. We appreciate our Board of Education. Mount Airy City Schools (MACS) has an amazing Board of Education (BOE). The members go above and beyond to volunteer their time in support of the superintendent and school district as well as listen to the direction of the community. This team of professionals attends two board meetings a month, many school events throughout the year, and statewide training sessions. The role of the board is:

Deceased inmate identified
The identity of an inmate who died in the custody of the Surry County Sheriff has been released. In a statement released late Friday the Surry County Sheriff’s Office said that Joseph Garrett Koehler, a 26-year-old white man, was found unresponsive at the detention center on the morning of Thursday, Jan. 23 at approximately 5:24 a.m.

J.E.B. Stuart birthday event set for Saturday
ARARAT, Va. — Maj. Gen. J.E.B. Stuart’s life came to a tragic end in 1864, but the happy occasion of his birth is still being commemorated 190 years later. This will include an annual birthday celebration this coming Saturday at the Ararat Ruritan Club building. It is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., to include a variety of activities such as live music, with admission free to the public.

White Plains Elementary names honor roll students
White Plains Elementary School recently held a celebration for students who made A and AB Honor Roll for the second nine-week grading period of the year. The school officials recognized the students with certificates and they had their pictures made with the other honor roll students.
