A man is dead after a hit and run Monday night, according to Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant.
Derrick Seals, 58, of Columbus was pronounced dead on the scene, Merchant said.
The incident happened about 11:50 p.m. on Seventh Avenue North near 21st Street North, according to Columbus Public Information Officer Joe Dillon.
Dillon said the victim is believed to have been walking east on 7th Avenue when he was struck by a dark or black car. Weather is not believed to have been a factor as it was clear at the time.
The man was apparently walking his dog when he was struck, Merchant said.
Dillon said the city is pulling footage from video cameras in the area in an effort to identify the car.
No arrests have been made, Dillon said Thursday morning, and the case is still under investigation.
Columbus Police Department investigators ask anyone who sees a dark-colored car with front-end damage or a broken windshield that hasn’t been evident in the past to call Golden Triangle Crimestoppers at 1-800-530-7151 or use the P3 app. Tipsters will remain anonymous, and there is a cash award for information leading to an arrest.
