DRAPER — A Utah Air National Guard airman from Roy died from medical complications on Tuesday after experiencing an unexpected medical emergency a few days prior.

Tech. Sgt. Burton Patrick Juengel was an airman assigned to the 151st Air Refueling Wing who was on a routine deployment to Guam. He was taken to the emergency room at the Guam Regional Medical Center on Nov. 25, but his medical condition worsened and he died "despite heroic efforts of the hospital staff" and "battling this issue for many days," a Utah National Guard statement said.

"We are devastated by the tragic loss of an outstanding airman and express our heartfelt condolences to his wife, children and family," said Brig. Gen. Daniel Boyack, commander of the Utah Air National Guard.

A statement said Juengel lived by Air Force values of "Integrity first, service before self, and excellence in all we do," and said he sacrificed his all for the mission he was assigned.

"This is a tremendous tragedy for all of us deployed on this mission," said Lt. Col. Philip Schembri, unit commander for the deployment. "Tech Sgt. Juengel was an outstanding airman and performed his job with enthusiasm and a positivity that motivated those around him."

Juengel is survived by his wife, their daughter and an unborn child, according to the Guard. He and his wife are Roy residents and she is also a member of the Utah Air National Guard.

Details for graveside services will be made public when the information becomes available.
