ALPENA COUNTY, MI – One person is dead and another is in critical condition after a crash in Northern Michigan.
Troopers from the Michigan State Police Alpena Post were dispatched to the 6000 block of French Road in Alpena County’s Alpena Township at 6:18 p.m. on Wednesday.
According to police, the driver of a 1997 Chevy S-10 had left the roadway and struck two trees. The vehicle was on its side and both the driver and passenger were unresponsive when troopers arrived.
Emergency crews worked to free the occupants and transported them to MyMichigan Medical Center in Alpena. The passenger, 54-year-old Andre Benton Edgekoski from Lachine, died at the hospital. The driver, a 57-year-old man from Alpena, was listed in critical condition.
A preliminary investigation indicates the truck was traveling northbound on French Road when the driver lost control due to extremely slippery roads. The vehicle then slid sideways off the east side of the road, dipped into a ditch, overturned, and struck the trees.
The Michigan State Police are reminding motorists to use caution while driving during freezing temperatures since road conditions can change quickly.
