Sugar Hill breaks ground on Ridge Lake Park

By Austin Eller News Director

Officials with the City of Sugar Hill broke ground Tuesday on Ridge Lake Park, a new 22-acre park located on Cumming Highway.

According to a press release from the city, the property was purchased by the city several years ago with the intention to retain greenspace along the Highway 20 corridor.

"This investment has turned a potential commercial development site into a beautiful outdoor recreation amenity the entire community can enjoy for generations to come," the release reads.

Mayor Brandon Hembree, City Council, representatives from contractor Reeves Young and other city staff were in attendance at the groundbreaking at 5494 Cumming Highway between the Arbor Clos neighborhood and Sugar Ridge Drive.

Ridge Lake Park will be built over two phases. Once complete, it will feature a playground area, dog park, walking trails, fishing pier and dock, disc golf and a rehabilitated pond dam.

Phase one of the project will consist of completing site development, landscape screening, parking, pond/dam reconstruction, restroom/storage building, picnic pavilion and the dog park. Phase one will begin immediately and is expected to be complete during the second quarter of 2023.

Phase two will consist of the installation of a dock, gazebo, walking trails and disc golf. This phase is programmed in the city's Capital Improvement Budget.

“Investing in greenspaces like Ridge Lake Park and the Sugar Hill Greenway is a priority of our city council and staff,” Councilmember Jenn Thatcher said. “The park will sit between the Chattahoochee River and Downtown Sugar Hill and is part of our continued effort to preserve the Chattahoochee River Corridor.”
