Semi wreck blocks highway for 7+ hours

A freightliner semi that wrecked early Wednesday morning left Highway 55 blocked for several hours.

According to the Russell County Sheriff’s Office, a 2012 freightliner semi hauling 38,000 pounds of steel rebar failed to negotiate a left curve on Highway 55 just after 6 a.m. Wednesday.

The wheels dropped into a ditch and the driver traveled more than 60 yards in the ditch before they were able to get the truck back on the highway.

According to the sheriff’s office, the truck nearly went over a steep drop off that could have been fatal.

The 38,000 pounds of rebar was thrown from the truck and had to be hand-loaded onto another trailer.

The portion of Highway 55 near the accident scene was closed for more than 7 hours.

Deputy Dustin Bunch with the Russell County Sheriff’s Office worked the scene, along with the Kentucky Highway Department, South Russell Fire Department, and the Russell County Rescue Squad, along with Candidos Recovery.
