Here are four local high school bowlers to keep an eye on this year

The Mid-Penn Conference doesn’t offer bowling as a varsity sport, but there is plenty of local prowess on area lanes.

Bowling is a club sport locally, but boys and girls teams from 10 Mid-Penn Conference schools comprise the Harrisburg Area Interscholastic Bowling League. The teams compete in a 16-week season from October to March.

The league’s team are from Bishop McDevitt, Cedar Cliff, Central Dauphin, CD East, Cumberland Valley, Dauphin County Technical School, Lower Dauphin, Middletown Susquehanna Township and Trinity.

Eight HAIBL bowlers (four boys and four girls) qualify for at-large spots in March’s District 3 tournament during a special event in January. They compete in the D3 tourney against bowlers from the Lancaster-Lebanon League, the Berks County Interscholastic Bowling League and the York-Adams League.

This year’s bowlers to watch all have prior District 3 experience and are expected to make an impact this season.

Matthew Pomian, sophomore, Cumberland Valley

Pomian has to be considered one the favorites for the District 3 boys crown after finishing second in the championship match last year by just 11 pins.

Pomian already has two 300 games to his credit, including one he rolled during last year’s D3 qualifier.

Jewel Johnson, senior, Bishop McDevitt

Johnson made a career athletic decision by eschewing her basketball aspirations to become a bowler. Johnson’s decision served her well last season when she finished fourth in the D3 tournament after topping the leaderboard last year.

Sarah Beaudet, senior, Middletown

Beaudet, who also plays softball for the Blue Raiders, launched a rally from 11th place in last year’s D3 tournament and rolled a 265 game late in qualifiers to edge her way into the championship round, where she dropped a quarterfinal match.

Knepp was a 2021 District 3 qualifier and sported a 222 average and a 289 high game during league play last year.

Breanne Hood, senior, Cumberland Valley

Hood, another District 3 qualifier who rolled a 686 series to get into the tournament, sported a 184 average in league play last season.
