Oregon's Attorney General Ellen Rosenblum says delaying Oregon’s voter-approved gun control Measure 114 would result in unnecessary deaths and "forestall Oregon’s effort to reduce the risk of a massacre within its borders."
That argument was presented in a 42-page court document filed Wednesday in response to an emergency motion aimed at stopping the law from going into effect Dec. 8.
Those who want to stop the measure include three county sheriffs, two gun store owners and the Oregon Firearms Federation. They say it's unconstitutional and violates the Second Amendment.
Rosenblum argues delaying the measure would lead to a rush of people trying to buy guns and magazines, highlighting that the number of background check requests for new firearms has quadrupled since the measure passed.
A judge set a hearing for the case Friday.
The measure requires people to get a permit, take a training course, and do a background check before they can buy a gun. It also limits magazine size.
