K9 Bond sniffs out drugs in Main St. arrest

Olney’s K9 Officer Bond nosed out a haul of drugs during a traffic stop on Main Street that sent a Los Angeles man to Young County Jail, Police Chief Dan Birbeck said. Bond’s partner, Officer Miranda Wright, stopped David Huang, 28, on the 400 block of West Main Street on Oct. 4 for having an expired registration, Chief Birbeck said. Officer Wright asked to search the vehicle after noticing the smell of marijuana emanating from the vehicle and Mr. Huang’s nervousness, Chief Birbeck said. Mr. Huang denied that he had any illegal substances in the vehicle, which he said he rented from Enterprise Rent-A-Car a few days earlier, the chief said.

“K9 Bond did an open-air search and positively alerted to the odor of narcotics. Officer Wright first located a THC vape pen on the driver’s floorboard, which is a felony,” Chief Birbeck said.

She found psilocybin mushrooms in the front passenger area along with the driver’s wallet and $3,600 in cash in a plastic baggie, as well as two containers full of gummy candies infused with THC and psilocybin mushrooms, he said.

In the trunk, Officer Wright discovered a glass jar containing about 1-½ pounds of marijuana, plastic bags containing drug paraphernalia, red-and-orange pills that lab tests determined were the prescription drugs Adderall and Alprazolam, he said.

Mr. Huang was charged with three counts of manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance, and possession of marijuana.

K9 Bond also racked up several other drug arrests in October, and continues to be an asset to the police force, Chief Birbeck said. “I put him up against any of the other dogs in the County,” Chief Birbeck said. “He’s on his game.”
