Health care scam in Coffee and Houston counties

ENTERPRISE, Ala. (WDHN) — Wiregrass authorities say a new scam is targeting healthcare authorities in Coffee and surrounding counties.

On Tuesday, a person or persons is calling nurse practitioners in walk-in clinics in Enterprise and Dothan.

They specifically ask for a nurse practitioner by name working at a clinic. They say the nurse didn’t respond to a subpoena for court, and now there are warrants out for the person’s arrest.

The culprits instruct the intended victim to go to a financial institution, or local pharmacy and purchase credit cards to pay the fines for not appearing for the subpoena.

They also direct the intended victim to go to the New Brockton Police department as a meeting place.

Authorities say they would never call someone about a subpoena, much less ask for fine money.

Coffee County Sheriff Officials also say if you receive a call from someone identifying themselves as Matthew Dykes or Greg Smith with their department, it’s part of the scam.

If you receive a call like this, they urge you to block the number and end the call.
