Stockton street vendor robbed at gunpoint, deputies looking for suspect
A Stockton street vendor is speaking out after she says she was robbed at gunpoint last week.
The San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office is investigating the armed robbery that happened two days before Thanksgiving on east Alpine Avenue and north Wilson Way in Stockton.
The victim is María Verónica Aguilar Lau, a woman who started selling tamales and other goods last year. She wakes up at 3 a.m. to prepare champurrado – a thick, warm Mexican beverage – pork, chicken, cheese and rajas tamales. It's a tedious job but one that helps pay the bills.
She tells KCRA 3 that a driver approached her and placed an order for a dozen tacos but when she neared the window, the woman in her 40s pulled out a gun and demanded all her money and belongings including vehicle keys and cell phone. But the woman wasn't alone; Aguilar La says a child about nine or 10 years old was in the backseat.
Since the robbery, she says she's been afraid to go out to sell and has been depending on people placing deliveries to earn some money, although it's a lot less during the holiday season.
But safety comes first, and Aguilar La said "Other street vendors should be careful and make sure that they're not alone especially if you're a woman."
A spokesperson with the San Joaquin County Sheriff's office couldn't provide further information but said no arrests have been made.
