COVID-19 spreading across Arizona in new holiday surge

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) — Even though the Valley saw no change last week, Thursday’s updated version of the U.S Drought Monitor map shows Arizona trending in the right direction after yet another round of wet winter storms. As of Thursday, 21% of the state remains in the “moderate” category, which translates into streams and reservoirs running on the low side, with some possible damage to local crops. A year ago, 57% of the state was in the “moderate” drought category. The biggest number that jumped compared to January 2022 was in the “severe” category. Over a quarter of Arizona was suffering from severe drought last January; now that number stands at just over 1%.

SCOTTSDALE, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) — For residents who lived through or grown up in the Valley since the 1970s, Jerry Foster should be a familiar name. PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) — Plan ahead if your upcoming weekend travel involves major freeways around Phoenix. Interstate 10 will close in both directions in the East Valley for construction this weekend, stretching from U.S. 60 to Loop 202. The Arizona Department of Transportation recommends leaving early if you plan to drive in that area or are taking that route to Tucson. Construction is part of the I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project, as crews will remove temporary structures and build the new Guadalupe Road bridge barrier.

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) — Arizona is no stranger to the foodie scene, and a handful of restaurants have been honored for their culinary creations. Four restaurants in the Grand Canyon State made Yelp’s annual list of the “Top 100 Places to Eat” in the country this year. Just making the Top 10 at No. 8 is Tumerico in Tucson. The restaurant features Latin-inspired vegan and vegetarian food with popular dishes like huevos rancheros and al pastor tacos. Yelpers also highlighted the breakfast burrito and the tasty salsa bar.

PHOENIX (3TV/CBS 5) — A recent study shows hearing aids are a preventative tool against dementia and cognitive decline. Done by National University of Singapore researchers, the study found the use of hearing aids was associated with close to a 20% reduction in long-term cognitive decline. But even in the short term, using hearing aids had an immediate positive impact. People like former hearing health care executive Brian Zielinski have already seen the impact these hearing aids can have. “Getting my dad to start using hearing aids, immediately you could see that change,” Zielinski said. “He was reengaged.”
