Police are investigating a deadly shooting that happened at a barbershop in Puyallup Wednesday evening.
The shooting happened at 5:09 p.m. at JQ's Barbershop at 112 East Stewart Street near North Meridian Street, according to Puyallup police. One person, the 43-year-old Tacoma owner of the barbershop, was shot and died at the scene, according to police.
Police said the suspected shooter walked up to the barbershop owner while he was cutting an 8-year-old boy's hair, pointed the gun at the owner and shot him multiple times.
"During the course of this there was an eight-year old child that was seated getting a haircut," Capt. Ryan Portman with Puyallup Police said, "The child was not harmed, unfortunately the child did witness this horrific act."
According to police, the child's mother, another barber, and another customer were all inside the shop at the time. No one else was injured. Police said they believe the shooting was targeted and said they believe the danger to the community is "low."
All day Thursday, longtime customers who’ve been attending the barbershop for over a decade came by to remember the victim, known as “JQ" to many in the neighborhood.
"He was a heck of a guy, enjoyed life, joked," Allen Simons, who knew the victim, said.
Officers used a police dog to search for the suspect who ran away from the scene but were unsuccessful in finding him. Police described the suspect as "an unknown race, male, 5'8", wearing black pants, a black jacket, and possibly a mask." They're asking anyone who was in the downtown area and saw someone matching this description to contact them. They're also asking anyone with surveillance systems to check their cameras in the moments leading up to and after 5 p.m. Wednesday when the shooting happened.
