Volunteer contractors needed to help 30 eastern Kentuckians beat the cold and get back into homes

EASTERN KENTUCKY (FOX 56) – Almost five months after the deadly floods in eastern Kentucky, there is still so much to be done, in so little time.

A nonprofit organization, “Christian Appalachian Project,” or “CAP” does home repairs for substandard housing in eastern Kentucky, however, the organization’s workload is still stacked, and to be done has come down to the wire, with freezing temperatures settling in.

Tina Bryson, director of communications at CAP, said many families are on the waiting list, and contractors are overwhelmed, so they’re asking for volunteers.

“Those who have a background in construction or maybe electricians, plumbers, those folks allow us to get through projects at a quicker pace, because they’re already coming in with that skill level to repair homes that were lost in July,” Bryson said.

Bryson adds that many eastern Kentuckians have been working on their home repairs, but some have reached their limit.

“In some cases, they just need some help. They don’t need a handout; they need someone to come alongside them and maybe make some of those repairs they’re not able to make themselves,” Bryson said.

Floods, insulation, cabinet repairs, drywall, plumbing, and HVAC are some of the types of expertise needed, and fast.

Bryson said there are many families in temporary living situations that will not outlast the cold.

“You had other families that had a storage unit, or a garage, or carport where they could stay temporarily until these repairs could be made,” Bryson said, “You could make those situations temporarily work for you, but now as we see the temperatures drop below, none of us would want to think of our grandparents living in a carport or storage unit when their home has been damaged by floodwaters.”

This is why CAP is asking for skilled volunteer contractors to come and help repair homes in eastern Kentucky, as soon as possible.
