2024 Mercedes E-Class Prototype Photographed Inside And Out

A new batch of pictures from our spy photographers has revealed some of the most important parts of the interior of the upcoming 2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class. Caught testing at night, we can now see the near-production infotainment setup of the car in situ.

In recent spy shots from China, we got a look the entire dashboard of the upcoming E-Class that’s codenamed W214, but the part was not installed in the vehicle. Here, the screen setup can be seen in the car, looking even sleeker than before.

As has become common, the 2024 E-Class will have a screen behind the steering wheel, as well as another larger display between the front seats. Thanks to smooth black trim pieces that have been strategically placed around the two screens, when off, they give the allusion of one giant unit, a bit like the Hyperscreen.

Under the central touchscreen, meanwhile, we can see a selection of buttons. Although they appear to be touch capacitive, they will, at least, always be there, allowing drivers to pick their driving mode, find the hazard lights, and turn up the volume on the entertainment system reliably.

Unfortunately, much of the rest of the interior is covered in camouflaging. In leaked photos, though, the vents were integrated into a curving line of trim that traced the top of the vertical portion of the dashboard. Ahead of the front passenger, meanwhile, a rather large piece of wood could be found, which buyers will presumably be able to customize.

It is worth noting that there are some subtle differences between the dash seen in these spy photos and the one seen in the leaked Chinese image, which may suggest that the Mercedes is still refining the design.

Outside, meanwhile, these photos show Mercedes testing the E-Class in two colors: black and metallic brown. Both cars, however, are wearing the same camouflage on the front and rear portions, hiding some important details.

Along the side of the vehicle, a character line can be seen at either end of the car, providing some visual intrigue. The sober sedan shape, meanwhile, is not a massive departure from the current car.

Powertrain Options

Although we have yet to receive confirmation of what will power the new car, we anticipate that Mercedes will endow the W214 E-Class with a turbocharged 2.0-liter, four-cylinder engine with varying degrees of electrification. It’s speculated that Mercedes might also offer an upgraded version of the turbocharged 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder M256 gasoline, and in markets outside North America, 3.0-litre in-line six-cylinder OM656 turbo diesel units as well.

At the top of the pile, the AMG E53 E-Performance plug-in hybrid is believed to borrow the advanced 2.0-liter turbocharged four from the AMG C63 E-Performance in which it makes 671 hp (500 kW / 680 PS) and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque.
