Historic Pershing mural finds new home at Lincoln’s Wyuka Cemetery

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Pershing mural has finally found a new home, but before it can be installed, $2 million needs to be raised.

The mural, which was carefully taken down from the Pershing Auditorium this summer, will now reside in Wyuka Cemetery’s park area.

The Pershing Mural Preservation Committee and Wyuka Historic Cemetery’s board of trustees announced the plans in a press release.

“The reinstallation of the Pershing Mural at Wyuka gives this marvelous artwork, a permanent, upright, and highly visible location easily viewed and visited by all,” Liz Shea-McCoy, chairwoman of the committee, said in the release.

Shea-McCoy said preliminary plans include seating, a stage for performances, lighting, security and additional parking.

Now that the mural has found a new home, phase two begins: raising $2 million for the restoration and reinstallation of the mural.

“This collaborative re-installation is the perfect intersection of cultural opportunity and historical perspective,” Shea-McCoy said.
