Straight line winds caused some damage in Sumiton on Main Street. During the overnight hours Tuesday into Wednesday, the roof was blown off Sumiton Mini Storage and onto a nearby home.
Wednesday afternoon, the community came together to clean up. Many people said they are thankful because it could have been a lot worse.
When the roof blew off the building, neighbors said they could hear it.
“It was like boom, it sounded like an explosion," said Jack Bunt.
Bunt lives with his sister nearby. They had no damage.
“I thought God was on our side," said Bunt. "He was there.”
When Bunt came outside, he described what he saw, talking about the debris around the building.
Sumiton Police along with Fire and Rescue answered the call.
"It is harder to see out there and harder to get a grasp of what's going on but we do have good equipment with scene lights so we had the place lit up pretty good so it didn't take us to long to get a grasp to what was going on," said firefighter Austin Hogg. “Life safety is number one, and property conservation comes after that.”
We are told the people who live in the home left Tuesday night. Their power got knocked out. Crews from both the storage building and city were working together to clean up.
“The community here at Sumiton, everybody gets along, we come together," said Bunt. "If it takes us to dark to get it done, we will.”
Sherry Allen also lives nearby where it happened.
“As the crow flies, less than a quarter of a mile, not far at all.”
When she saw the damage was contained and not widespread, she said she was 'thankful.' Allen said she feels for the family who was impacted.
“Times are really hard for many people and I hate something happens to make it harder.”
Sumiton Mini Storage said there's minimal water damage inside. They are working to clean up and make repairs.
