Winter storm hits Northern California: Chain controls continue in the Sierra

Winter storm hits Northern California: Chain controls continue in the Sierra
THIS MIRACULOUS RESCUE. >> RIGHT NOW, CHECKING IN ON THE WEATHER. THE SNOW MAY HAVE STOPPED IN THE SIERRA TONIGHT BUT FOR A WHILE IT WAS PILING UP. THIS IS TIMELAPSE FROM ALERT WILDFIRE’S EDGEWOOD TAHOE CAMERA. IT WAS REALLY COMING DOWN. EDIE: SHOWING YOU THE CONDITIONS EARLIER. AND ALONG HIGHWAY 50 AT ECHO SUMMIT. SNOW BUILDING UP ON THE ROAD. ALSO ON ONE OF THE CAMERAS. BOTH AREAS HAVE SEEN CLOSURES. OFFICERS HAVE HELD TRAFFIC AT DIFFERENT POINTS. TY: THIS DECEMBER 1 STORM ALSO BROUGHT RAIN TO THE VALLEY. HERE ARE LOOKS AT CONDITIONS IN SACRAMENTO, FOLSOM, AND WOODLAND. NO MAJOR PROBLEMS, BUT IF YOUR LEAVES WERE CLOGGED YOU MAY HAVE SEEN SOME FLOODING. IN A MOMENT, WE’LL HEAR FROM KCRA 3 CHIEF METEORLOGIST MARK FINAN BUT FIRST LETS GO LIVE TO MELANIE WINGO, SHE’S BEEN OUT IN THE SNOW ALL NIGHT. MELANIE, SOUNDS LIKE IT’S BEEN A MESS OUT THERE. >> IT HAS BEEN. A NIGHT FILLED WITH CLOSURES AND DELAYS ON INTERSTATE 80. THINGS ARE PRETTY CALM. NOT SNOWING IN SODA SPRINGS. ROUGHLY THE 6700 FOOT ELEVATION. THROUGH THE DAY, THE SIERRA SAW SEVERAL INCHES OF NEW SNOW FALL BRINGING WITH IT A LOT OF HEADACHES AND DANGEROUS CONDITIONS ON THE HIGHWAY. THE MONTH OF DECEMBER USHERED IN BY A NEEDED AND WELCOME STORM SYSTEM. BUT ALONG WITH NEW SIERRA SNOW CAME HIGHWAY HANGUPS AND HEADACHES. A RIPPLE EFFECT FELT AT LOWER ELEVATIONS AS CALTRANS AND CHP CLEARED CRASHES AND SPINOUTS HIGHER UP THE PAST. EASTBOUND DRIVERS DIVERTED OFF OF INTERSTATE 80, SNACKING ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD TO WAIT OUTSIDE CLOSURES. >> WE CAME UP, THEY MADE US TURN AROUND. WE WAITED AND WE FOUND IT WAS OPEN, SO WE CAME BACK UP. >> THE ROAD FINALLY REOPENING FOR CARS AND TRUCKS GETTING ACROSS INTERSTATE 80. >> WORKING ON THE SIDE OF THE FREEWAY. >> BIG RIGS IN NEED OF HELP. >> WHEN THERE IS A SNOWSTORM, WE ARE HERE. >> GIVEN A HAND BY TECHNICIANS WORKING THROUGH THE STORM. >> DOESN’T MATTER WHAT TEMPERATURE. >> GUYS WHO HAVE SEEN IT ALL JUST LIKE THIS. >> DON’T KNOW HOW TO INSTALL THEIR OWN CHAINS. DOING THAT ON THEIR OWN, IT CAUSES A LOT OF TIRE PROBLEMS. >> WITH ED ROYCE FOR DRIVERS HEADING IN THIS DIRECTION. >> PEOPLE CAN LOSE CONTROL. THE BEST THING I RECOMMEND IS DOING IT IN A PARKING LOT WHERE YOU ARE SAFE. >> THAT IS A GOOD IDEA TO GET THE CHAINS ON IN AN AREA THAT IS OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. DON’T LEARN HOW TO DO IT PULLED OFF TO THE SIDE OF THE ROAD. THE CHAIN TECHNICIANS WHO DEAL WITH THE BIG RIGS TELL US TO WATCH A YOUTUBE VIDEO AHEAD OF TIME SO YOU ARE WELL VERSED IN HOW TO GET THE TRACTION DEVICES ON YOUR CAR. CALTRANS HAS SPENT THE EVENING PLOWING INTERSTATE 80. ALTHOUGH THEY HAVE DONE A GREAT JOB MAKING SURE THE ROADWAY IS CLEAR, THE SNOW IS OFF TO THE SIDE. IT IS SLICK IN MANY SPOTS ALONG THE SIERRA THROUGH INTERSTATE 80. YOU HAVE TO KEEP THE SPEEDS TO NO HIGHER THAN 30 MILES PER HOUR. REPORTING LIVE, MELANIE WINGO. TY: A MESS ON THE ROADS, BUT BEAUTIFUL WHERE YOU ARE STANDING. THANK YOU FOR THE COVERAGE. >> IT IS NOT BAD. SEE YOU IN A BIT. EDIE: WITH MORE ON THE SNOW AND RAIN AND WHAT WE CAN EXPECT, LET’S CHECK IN WITH MARK FINAN. MARK: RAIN AND SNOW BASICALLY DONE. THE AREA WHERE MELANIE WAS. THE LAST OF THE RAIN AND SNOW HAS BEEN EXITING. WE DID HAVE NICE RAIN AND GOOD ALONG 108. STILL CHAIN RESTRICTIONS ABOVE HIGHWAY 120. ALL OF THAT IS WRAPPING UP AS THE WEATHER SYSTEM MOVES OUT. BEHIND IT, SOME SNOW FLURRIES. THEY WILL BE GOING AWAY SOON. THE WEATHER SYSTEM HAS LEFT BEHIND COLD AIR. THAT IS WHAT WE FEEL NOW AND TOMORROW MORNING. 11 DEGREES COLDER THAN THIS TIME LAST NIGHT. STARTING TOMORROW IN THE 30’S.
