As first reported by SI’s Ross Dellenger, West Virginia University is expected to hire North Texas AD Wren Baker as their next Director of Athletics. Baker served as UNT’s AD since 2016, as well as Vice President.

Baker is 44-years-old and is a native of Oklahoma. The University is expected to formally announce the hiring this week.

Baker played a vital role in helping get UNT into the American Athletic Conference during the next realignment period. WVU Interim AD Rob Alsop wanted the next athletic director to be in with the new times. West Virginia University hired the same search firm that the Big 12 Conference had to hire Brett Yormark. It’s about finding someone who can lead the university in the new era of college athletics.

West Virginia moved on from AD Shane Lyons about two weeks ago. Lyons served as Director of Athletics since 2015, but ultimately was let go after the recent performance by the football program after Lyons extended head coach Neal Brown back in April 2021.

It’s unknown for now what Baker’s decision will be on Brown but expect something to be said soon.
