Warm, windy Friday will increase fire risk in NW Kansas

After a chilly Tuesday and Wednesday, the National Weather Service in Dodge City is calling for the mercury to jump in the coming days.

The high Thursday is expected to be in the upper-50s, rising all the way to the mid-70s by Friday.

Windy conditions, dry vegetation and low humidity will heighten the risk of fires, the NWS warned. South-southeast winds will begin to pick up Wednesday night — sustained at 20 mph through Friday. Friday could see gusts near 40 mph.

Temperatures will become more seasonal starting Saturday, with highs ranging from the low-40s to mid-50s into next week. Overnight lows will continue to be below the freezing point.

No precipitation is in the forecast. Tuesday's snow was measured as just a trace amount of moisture by the K-State Ag Research Center. The overnight low of 8 degrees was just 6 degrees above the record set in 1919 and 1952.
