14 students injured after school bus crash in Accomack; driver facing charges

ACCOMACK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) – A school bus driver and several students were sent to a local hospital after their bus crashed in Accomack Wednesday morning.

Just after 9 a.m., a state police spokesperson alerted WAVY that troopers were at the crash scene, on Pungoteague Road just north of Boggs Road. This is in the Pungoteague area of the county.

A preliminary investigation of the crash revealed that the bus was traveling north on Pungoteague Road when the driver experienced a medical emergency.

The bus was on its way to Pungoteague Elementary School when it ran off the roadway, into a ditch, and struck an electrical pole.

There were 25 children on board the bus when the crash occurred. 14 students, between the age of 5 and 10 years old, were taken to a local hospital.

Virginia State Police says the students suffered non life-threatening injuries.

The driver, 66-year-old Robert S. Walker, was also taken to a local hospital. He has been charged with reckless driving/failing to maintain proper control of a vehicle.

When 10 On Your Side asked Virginia State Police about the charges, a spokesperson said they couldn’t reveal too much information out of respect for the driver’s privacy.

However, we are told he was charged because there was something that “could have been avoided or could have stopped the bus.” The spokesperson said it was not a severe medical emergency.

WAVY reported on another crash involving an Accomack County school bus in March.
